Why would China be an interesting place to visit?

Consider a few facts:

1. It is the world’s most populous country with a population of over 1.35 billion.
2. Covering approximately 9.6 million square kilometers China is the world’s second largest country by land area.
3. The history of China goes back to its ancient civilization – one of the world’s earliest.
4. China has become one of the world’s fastest growing major economies.
5. As of 2013, it is the world’s second-largest economy and is also the world’s largest exporter and importer of goods.

My wife and I had always said that if we ever got the chance to go to the far east and teach we would do it.   We never thought that we would really get a chance.  But then one day it happened.  An opportunity of a lifetime just dropped into our laps.

Mary was teaching Elementary Art in the Omaha Public School System and I was employed as a Contract Engineer at the Ft. Calhoun Nuclear Station when we got the opportunity to teach Conversational English and American Culture in Weihai, China for a summer.  It turned out to be quite an adventure.
