According to Wikipedia the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally is an American motorcycle rally held annually in Sturgis South Dakota during the first full week of August. It began in 1938 and was originally held for stunts and races, but has evolved into being a meeting for motorcycle enthusiasts from around the world. It brings significant income to the citizens of Sturgis, a town of only 6,627 people. It is one of the largest motorcycle rallies in the world.
I never really thought much about the big “Motorcycle Rally in the Sky”. I’m talking about the one in Sturgis South Dakota. It’s the motorcycle rally where Harley guys from everywhere show up. I had heard about it, of course, and how things were crazy and wild there but I never had a real itch to go, until one day. Our first time there was the result of a suggestion from my wife. We were to become very familiar with the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally as we would attend 7 times between 2000 and 2007; each visit was a unique adventure in itself.
Our experiences at the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally are documented in the book “Exploits of a Common Adventurer” by kent irwin.
